The introduction of the India e visa system has simplified the visa application process for short-term stays, although some nationalities might need to pursue traditional visas via local Indian embassies or consulates.

If you’re a foreigner planning to visit India for tourism, business, or medical, you’ll need to get an India e-Visa, unless you’re from one of the very few visa-exempt countries. Citizens of over 170 countries can apply for the India e-Visa online.

Electronic vs. consular visa

You can choose between two types of tourist visas offered by India: the electronic visa and the consular visa. The primary difference between an India e visa and a regular paper visa is the method of application, purpose of visit and how its issued.

An e-visa for India is electronic and applied online, while a regular paper visa involves direct interaction with an Indian embassy or consulate visa. Remember, almost all countries can apply for an Indian embassy visa. Regular paper visas can be applied at the nearest Indian diplomatic mission.

India’s e-Tourist visa rules

  • The Indian e-Visa is non-extendable, non-convertible. It’s a one-time deal: you can’t extend or change its purpose.
  • There are places you can’t visit with it, like Protected, Restricted, or Cantonment Areas.
  • Minors need to get their own e visa to visit India.
  • You need an e visa for cruise ship arrivals.

It’s important to note that tourists cannot simply "renew" an e-Visa while in India. You’d need to approach the local Foreigners Regional Registration Office (F.R.R.O) for that.

Remember, while the F.R.R.O can help with visa matters, they still follow specific rules and procedures. Always be informed and plan ahead with us!

Who cannot apply for an Indian e-Visa

Unfortunately, you cannot apply for an Indian e visa if you:

  • Are a citizen of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, China, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, or Nepal.
  • Are a diplomatic or official passport holder.
  • Have been previously deported from India.
  • Have a criminal record.

Natvisa recommends contacting the nearest Indian embassy if you are ineligible to apply for India e-Visa. Good luck!
